Barbed Tapestry was created with over 1000 individual pieces of glass: Nearly 200 wide strips, 500 threads, 200 tiny silver stones and almost 100 beads. The wide strips of color contain over 100 different hues of blue and gray with hints of purple, lilac, gold and pink. Woven in three different directions, Barbed Tapestry is a nod to the mysterious geode rocks that, when broken open, reveal their inner beauty and radiance.
Barbed wire had only been integrated with 2 other Markow & Norris sculptures at the start of their artistic journey in 2004. An original remnant of this wire was found and used to delicately wrap the tapestry to highlight and emphasize its undulating waves and juxtapose the harsh imposing wire next to the seemingly soft pliable glass fabric. But the glass fabric is an enigma, like the barbed wire, it too just be handled with care.
