- July 29, 2015
8 ft. wide x 9.5 ft. tall
The Torii Arch is an important symbol in Japanese folklore. It represents prosperity and good fortune. The Torii is commonly used as an entrance to Shinto shrines and other holy places where good spirits and forces of nature are found. Torii translated is “Bird Perch.” Legend has it that the birds perching on the Torii, lure the sun goddess out of hiding and bring the world out of darkness. “Red Torii Arch” features 14 woven glass feathers from the fabled Vermilion Bird of the South, this resplendent bird also represents the element of “Fire” and the season of “Summer.” The gold character in the middle of the arch is the Japanese Kanji symbol for “Summer.”
Over 70 hues of reds and oranges were handmade by the artists to weave into each feather. The small feathers have cast glass quills and the larger feathers feature a solid brushed aluminum quill. Each feather can be hung in any orientation.
Nine of these feathers have been SOLD. The five AVAILABLE feathers are the bottom two on each side and the center feather with the Kanji symbol for “Summer.”
