ARTISTS MARKOW & NORRIS CELEBRATED AT HOME
Solo Exhibit “Woven Glass” at Weisser Gallery Nov. 15 – Dec. 13
Washington, DC. July 2009 – The heightened anticipation is over. Eric Markow and Thom Norris have been exhibiting and sharing their coveted woven glass sculptures around the country and are now back presenting never before seen pieces in their solo exhibition at the glass art studio that launched their career. Markow & Norris are proud to be exhibiting in Kensington, Maryland at Weisser Gallery, the studio and gallery space where they began working with warm glass before inventing their alluring and captivating woven glass technique. Running November 15 thru December 13, the exhibit will be showcasing highlights of their 5 year history since first debuting their woven glass sculptures in the fall of 2004.
New works will include the piece-de-resistance of their Origami Sculpture Collection, a freestanding, life-size Autumn Sunset Kimono. Breaking boundaries and appearing to go against the laws of physics, Autumn Sunset Kimono will be on exhibit for the first time. It is the first of several seasonal Woven Glass Kimono sculptures planned.
With the dramatic right angles and the exuberant color-palette Markow & Norris have become known for, the show will also feature white and multi-colored Peace Cranes, individual hanging spectacles weighing in at 35-pounds each. Equally impressive highlights include their latest commission, an Asian Elephant wall sculpture, complete with a long trunk and designed after the traditionally painted sacred elephants of India; also shown for the first time locally, Coral Reef, a 5-foot wide sculptural masterpiece depicting life under the sea.
Markow & Norris have garnered rave reviews and awards for their sophisticated weaving. Along with exhibiting at SOFA Chicago, such accomplishments have earned them an appearance on CBS News Sunday Morning, a destination for the Smithsonian Associates Home/Studio Tour and features in top tier magazines like Southern Living, Interior Design, Robb Report, The Advocate, American Style, Home & Design and many others. Attributed to their wild success is their “innovation in the aesthetic realm and drive to seek out the unknown” says Nancy Weisser, the gallery owner and award winning glass artist herself. As an educator turned self-described Markow & Norris fan, she appreciates what she learns from her former students. “As a teacher of glass, it is very exciting and fulfilling for me to see what they have been able to accomplish in a relatively short amount of time. They’ve established themselves as top-selling artists with a national following and are an inspiration to the glass art community. I am honored to give them a show.”
Weisser Gallery in Kensington, Maryland’s arts community is a non-traditional gallery.
