FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MARKOW & NORRIS CELEBRATED FOR EXCELLENCE IN GLASS

Handwoven Glass Artisans Win Prestigious National Capital Art Glass Guild Award Falls Church, VA July 2005 – The groundbreaking woven glass artisans Eric Markow and Thom Norris have won the coveted National Capital Art Glass Guild award for Excellence in Glass. Eric Markow & Thom Norris accepted their award at the Creative Craft Council’s 25th biennial exhibition gala at Strathmore Mansion in Rockville, Maryland.

Markow & Norris, celebrated for their intricate, vividly colorful and technically mystifying woven glass sculptures and bowls, are honored to win an award in a competition where aesthetics and technical mastery are of equal importance: “We are so pleased to be recognized with the award for Excellence in Glass and to be a part of such a talented group of local artists. We hope that our work returns at least some of the inspiration we have received over the years in the company of our artist friends and colleagues.”

The show was juried by Donald Stuart, an award winning designer, artisan, teacher and artist long known for his work in metal and precious stone inlay. Of the 578 pieces of art entered for consideration, only 165 were accepted for the show. From a technical standpoint, Stuart looked for a mastery of artisanship and the perfection of experienced hands. Aesthetically, the art was judged for sense of proportion, harmony and balance, as well as for its freshness and spontaneity.

Markow & Norris were honored for their piece “Confetti Bowl,” a woven glass table sculpture with an innovative design of interlacing colors and striking technical dexterity. In the juror’s words: “Color adds such vitality to our lives. Add to that the juxtaposition of patterns, textures and materials and we have excitement.”

Markow & Norris are the premiere woven glass artists in the world, with a proprietary and distinctive tightly woven technique. Every Markow & Norris piece is rare, handmade in the artists’ Virginia studio to be a one of a kind heirloom.
